Pleiades (M45) -- Open Cluster in Taurus
Subaru Star Cluster
The Pleiades (M45) is the most impressive open cluster in the night sky. It is four-times the
size of the full moon and bright enough to be seen without a telescope even in moderately
light-polluted skies. The Japanese word for the Pleiades is Subaru. The Subaru emblem
showing the brighter stars of the Pleiades can be found on all their cars. With the unaided
eye, or through a pair of binoculars, the Pleiades looks like a small dipper. Away from the
city the cluster can be seen covered in a faint nebulosity. Where I live, the light pollution
makes seeing the nebulosity a real challenge. It took me around two-hours to complete this
drawing and to find a small amount of nebulosity around the star Merope.
