NGC 2355 -- Open Cluster in Gemini
The Jedi Knight
NGC 2355 is a rich faint Open Cluster. The cluster is very old for an Open Cluster (1 billion
years). It is mostly an unresolved phantom of 13th magnitude and fainter stars at the
eyepiece in my 6-inch telescope from the suburbs.
The cluster goes by the name of "The Jedi Knight". For some imaginative individuals the
brighter stars in, and adjacent to the cluster, form a Jedi Knight holding a lightsaber. I sure
could not make out the figure. Either the orientation of the drawing is keeping me from
seeing it or my lack of imagination. Anyway, it is a cool name.
