NGC 4244 -- Spiral Galaxy in Canes Vennatici
Silver Needle Galaxy
This edge-on spiral galaxy is interesting in that the core appears stretched along the center
line of the galaxy. The disk is thin and extends for a healthy distance beyond the core. The
disk was best teased out at 182x, but the overall view of this thin-line-of-light was at the
magnification used in the drawing of 84x. NGC 4244 is number 26 of the Caldwell Objects
and one of his better choices for observing with a modest-sized telescope under suburban
skies.
