NGC 4570 -- Lenticular Galaxy in Virgo
When Thin appears Fat
The edge-on Lenticular Galaxy NGC 4570, when viewed from my suburban backyard with
the 155mm refractor, was a nearly invisible ghost at low power (64x).  Even at higher power
(182x) the galaxy’s thin-elongated disk was invisible.  The best I could do was to see the
core with its star-like nucleus.

When dealing with edge-on galaxies at the edge-of-visibility this has happened to me on
more than one occasion.  But I cannot complain about my view of NGC 4570 since, more
often than not, such dim thin galaxies are not to be found at all.
