M 22 (NGC 6656) -- Globular Cluster in Sagittarius
The Celestial Arkenstone Of Thrain
"It was as if a globe had been filled with moonlight and hung before them in a net
woven of the glint of frosty stars" J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit.
The Globular Cluster, M22 has been coined the Celestial Arkenstone of Thrain, first
by Burnham and later by O'Meara. I cannot think of a better description of it. I made a
drawing of M22 this morning; relaxing a bit before shutting down, after I had a couple
of intense hours observing the planets. My 6-inch telescope had no problem resolving
the brighter 100 or so stars, softly nestled against the background of a half-million
unresolved stars.
