M3 (NGC 5272) -- Globular Cluster in Canes Venatici
A Sphere Of 500,000 Suns
The Globular Cluster designated as M3 or NGC 5272 has always been one of my favorite
deep sky objects. I spent the early morning hours attempting to locate a comet but was
not successful. What is wonderful about astronomy is that even if you fail to find your
current target you still have plenty of other cool things to fall back on. The light from M3
took 32,000 years to reach my eye for this drawing. I have no doubt that seeing a
half-million stars in a tight ball will always make an observing night to remember,
no matter how many times I point my telescope towards it. Drawing done at 2:10AM
on the morning of February 16, 2017.
