NGC 6709 -- Open Cluster in Aquila
The Eagle’s Finest Open Cluster
The constellation Aguila (The Eagle) is not known for its Open Clusters.  Having said that, one
should not miss NGC 6709.  It is a quaint and attractive cluster of stars.  Stephen O’Meara in
his “Hidden Treasures” calls this cluster the “Flying Unicorn Cluster” and he labeled it his
HT-94.  The celestial unicorn appears to have left the cluster since I could not make it out – but
he is right about one thing, “NGC 6709 is a treasure trove of multiple star systems, and one
could easily spend an evening with this object, surveying it for new groups at different
magnifications”.
